The Rockingham County Emergency Communications Governance Board considered the merits of hiring a consultant or project manager to oversee building a countywide 911 communications center during the board’s first meeting Tuesday.

Most of the work a consultant would usually undertake has already been completed by county staff, according to IT Director David Whicker and 911 Director Susan Hall. She said Rockingham County was commended by the North Carolina 911 Board on the amount of details included in the county’s grant application.

911 consolidation grant approved

The $7.8 million grant award agreement from the North Carolina 911 Board to consolidate the county’s 911 call centers was approved Monday night by Rockingham County Commissioners, along with five members from a seven-member board that will serve as a governing board for the new consolidated agency.

The grant agreement must be returned to the state 911 Board by Dec. 23 after it’s also been approved by the county’s new governing agency, Rockingham County Emergency Communications. National Weather Service – Conducts Skywarn Class

After storms swept past Rockingham County and caused widespread destruction east of the area, it was only fitting that the National Weather Service would hold an event to tell Rockingham County residents what to look for to predict bad weather.

Rockingham County Emergency Management hosted Warning Coordination Meterologist Phil Hysell and Meteorologist Marc Chenard from the National Weather Service out of Blacksburg, Va., on Monday night.

Awards leave Rockingham 911 director speechless

WENTWORTH — Rockingham County 911 director Susan Hall is the first person ever to receive the top two state awards for communications leaders.

Hall was honored Sept. 12-16 during the N.C. Association Public Safety Communications Officials and National Emergency Number Association annual conference.

She was named 911 Center/Manager Director of 2010 by the state group  and Communications Leader of the Year by the national organization .

One of her four 911 communications teams also received the Shift of the Year award during the ceremony.
